In a private lobby the host can switch from Standard to Custom mode and change every setting below. The core rules from the Game Guide still apply — custom settings adjust the numbers, not the mechanics.
Standard vs. Custom
Every private lobby starts in Standard mode with fixed settings. Toggling to Custom unlocks the full configuration screen. Quick Play always uses Standard.
| Standard | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Board | 15 × 15, normal bonus layout | Quick (11 × 11), Standard, or Grand (19 × 19). Optional blank board. |
| Timer | Casual – 7-day deadline | Competitive (per-turn seconds) or Casual (custom deadline) |
| Dictionary | Player’s choice (Svenska or English) | Host’s choice (Svenska or English) |
| Items | All enabled, default prices | Toggle individual items, adjust prices |
| Economy | Default values | Full control over coins, scoring, and conversion |
| Rules | Default values | Fortify cap, Blast surcharge, power slots, penalties |
| Alfa Power Tile | Enabled, 5-tile trigger, 2× multiplier | Full control over trigger, multiplier, limits, and behavior |
| Statistics | Full stats, records, streaks, and leaderboard | Win/loss/draw and head-to-head only |
The guest sees a read-only view of the host’s custom settings plus a note that custom games track limited statistics.
Board
Map sizes
| Size | Grid | Max tiles in bag |
|---|---|---|
| Quick | 11 × 11 | 70 |
| Standard | 15 × 15 | 100 |
| Grand | 19 × 19 | 130 |
Blank board
Turning on Blank Board removes all built-in double-letter, triple-letter, double-word, and triple-word spaces. Only the center starting square remains. Bonus-placement items become the sole source of board multipliers.
Timer
Standard games always use Casual mode with a 7-day deadline. In Custom mode the host can choose either timer mode and adjust the values.
Competitive mode
A per-turn seconds timer. When the clock runs out, the game records an automatic pass.
| Preset | Seconds per turn |
|---|---|
| Rapid | 60 |
| Classic | 90 |
| Custom | 5 – 600 |
Three consecutive timeouts result in forfeit. Only a placed word or voluntary pass clears the timeout streak.
Casual mode
A move deadline in hours. Take your time across hours or days.
| Preset | Deadline |
|---|---|
| 12 hours | 12 h |
| 1 day | 24 h |
| 2 days | 48 h |
| 7 days | 168 h |
| Custom | 1 – 168 h |
If the deadline expires, you lose immediately. The timer is hidden when more than 24 hours remain.
Reconnect windows (multiplayer only)
| Match type | Reconnect window |
|---|---|
| Competitive timed | 5 minutes |
| Casual | Up to 24 hours (capped by deadline) |
Economy
The economy controls how quickly coins flow and how much they are worth at the end of the game.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Starting coins | 0 | Coins each player begins with. |
| Base coins per turn | 3 | Flat coin income on every scoring turn (and pass bonus). |
| Score-to-coins rate | 10% | Percentage of your turn score added as extra coins (rounded down). |
| Pass bonus | 3 | Coins earned when you pass instead of placing a word. |
| Coin-to-point ratio | 0.5 | At endgame, every 2 unspent coins become 1 extra point. |
Items and prices
The host can enable or disable individual items and adjust coin costs. At least one item must stay enabled.
| Item | Default cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Swap | 3c | |
| Fortify | 2c base | +1c when upgrading a tile that already has a fortify bonus below the cap |
| Claim | 2c | |
| Blast | 4c base | +2c surcharge when fewer than 10 tiles remain in the bag (configurable) |
| Place DL | 4c | |
| Place TL | 6c | |
| Place DW | 8c | |
| Place TW | 10c |
Rules
Advanced rule settings that fine-tune gameplay balance.
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fortify cap | 1 | Maximum fortify bonus a single tile can receive. |
| Blast endgame surcharge | 2 | Extra coins added to Blast cost when fewer than 10 tiles remain. |
| Power slots | 7 | Maximum number of power-ups a player can hold at once (1–10). |
| Invalid word point penalty | 1 | Points deducted per failed placement attempt. |
| Invalid word coin penalty | 1 | Coins deducted per failed placement attempt. |
| Allow bag peek | Yes | Whether players can view remaining tiles in the bag. |
Alfa Power Tile
The Alfa Power Tile is a special blank tile earned by placing enough tiles in a single turn. In Standard mode it uses the defaults below. In Custom mode every parameter can be adjusted.
| Setting | Default | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enabled | Yes | — | Turn the Alfa Power Tile feature on or off. |
| Trigger tile count | 5 | 1 – 7 | Number of tiles you must place in one turn to earn an Alfa Power Tile. |
| Word multiplier | 2× | ≥ 1 | Word multiplier applied to the Alfa Power cell. |
| Permanent multiplier | No | — | When off (default), the multiplier applies only on the placement turn, like DW and TW. When on, every future word crossing the cell gets the multiplier. |
| Free placement | Yes | — | When on, the tile can be placed anywhere without adjacency. When off, it must connect to existing tiles. |
| Can replace tiles | Yes | — | Whether the Alfa Power Tile can be placed on an occupied cell, replacing whatever is there. |
| Max per game | 0 (unlimited) | ≥ 0 | Cap on total Alfa Power Tiles each player can earn per game. 0 means no limit. |
| Max on board | 0 (unlimited) | ≥ 0 | Cap on how many Alfa Power Tiles can exist on the board at once. 0 means no limit. |
| Keep on swap | Yes | — | Whether the Alfa Power upgrade is preserved when the tile is swapped back into the bag. |
Alfa Power Tiles are always immune to all items (Fortify, Blast, Claim, and bonus-placement items), regardless of custom settings.
